Why wear sunglasses? Sunglasses should reduce ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Our eyes cannot see this radiation and sunglasses have an important function in blocking UVR. Long periods of exposure may cause damage to ones eyesight and may accelerate the development of cataracts. It also can cause the skin to age prematurely. When to wear sunglasses? During summer ultraviolet radiation reaches a peak far in excess of that during the winter. The increase can reach far higher levels and in open areas especially near large expanses of water or snow, the reflection can cause the Ultraviolet radiation to be many times higher than normal.
